For Ethan

For once there was a boy

Who ran through the mountains

And laughed under the bluest sky

Who railed at injustice

And never cleaned his room

For once there was a boy

with energy untapped and unending

And a voice and a laugh and a hug

And a smile and a head of thick black hair

Wild like the clouds

That hid insecurities and fear

and covered the voices of doubt

And a loneliness so desperate and painful

That he hurt the ones he loved

And took from him the things that drove his passion.

For the drum and the cow bell sit silent

And the dark cold concrete

scattered ashes and fading memories

lost

He never found his way
