My son took his life. His depression was hidden and undiagnosed and on the day he died there was no indication of a serious problem. A year earlier he had made a half hearted attempt by taking an overdose of a sleeping aide. He owned up to it and talked to a counselor and a psychiatrist at Fresno State’s student health, until they were satisfied that there were no significant issues with either suicide or depression. Apparently the medication prescribed for his chronic insomnia had significant side effects and by removing him from this drug, they felt, and Ethan felt, that the issue was resolved.

Depression is a serious issue. Take it serious. Be willing to argue. To fight. To get whatever help you need to deal with it… drag it out of the darkness and into the light. It is internal. People can usually see the impact on your…
